How We Work

The NCCA gathers together Churches and Christian communities which confess the Lord Jesus Christ as God and Saviour according to the Scriptures. We commit to deepen our relationship with each other and to work together towards the fulfilment of common witness, proclamation and service, to the glory of the one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Our Purpose

  • Connect the leaders of state and territory disaster recovery chaplaincy networks.
  • Connect with governments, ecumenical councils and other groups to extend the work of disaster and emergency chaplaincy response in Australia

Be a Peak Body and Point of Reference in relation to:

  • The Commonweatlh Government
  • Funding bodies
  • Emergency Volunteer Forums

Terms of Reference

  1. As a network of the National Council of Churches, AVECA agrees to operate in accordance with the NCCA Constitution, in particular s23 which outlines the responsiblities of Commissions and Networks
  2. AVECA will also apply the NCCA Public Statements policy, (Policy an Procedure on Public Statements & the Media Adopted in Principle as a Working Document by the NCCA Executive -June 2005)
  3. Meet on an annual basis
  4. Share resources, ideas and lessons
  5. Facilitate cooperation and support between states and territories in regards to emergency management chaplaincy 1. 
  6. Advocate nationally on behalf of State and Territory Emergency Management Chaplaincy
  7. Develop national standards, policy, protocols and approach to the provision of pastoral care in community-wide emergencies specifically:
    1. Training and accreditation
    2. Code of ethics

1. This term encapsulates Disaster Recovery and Emergency Chaplaincy within the state and territory emergency management arrangements. It does not include military or combat agency chaplaincy (ie. formalised chaplaincies to groups such as Fire, Police, SES or Ambulance personnel).
