I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. John10:10
The promise of abundance is an interesting one. Jesus describes this giving of abundant life as being his deep purpose and indicates that this is for ‘they’ – sheep of many folds!
Jesus makes this statement in the context of a comparison between thieves and robbers who ‘come to kill and destroy’ and his being the Good Shepherd. The promise of abundance is one that cannot be bettered. It is the offer of life that is above and beyond all that we can imagine.
Abundant life flows from the actions and obedience of Jesus. Jesus makes a choice and lays down his life. It is a gracious action, and wholly for the benefit of others. The basis of this confidence is described in John 10:17-18. This life as a gift of God.
John 10 and the themes within it stand in total contrast to our current environment. Jesus does not compete for power. He does not favour or demean one group over another. There are no complaints about his not being recognised or celebrated. Rather this is Jesus, grace personified and without ego demands, who exists for others, and with the hope of unity being found in him (one flock and one shepherd in verse 16).
In the coming two weeks the Christian community journeys together towards Palm Sunday and Holy Week. As one, we are all recipients of the promise of abundant life, the sheep of a single flock with one shepherd.
