from act for peace - the international aid agency of the National Council of Churches in Australia

act for peace and its partners are providing assistance to thousands of people displaced by the fighting in Sri Lanka. This assistance includes food, shelter, water and sanitation, trauma care, health and protection for internally displaced persons.

We urgently need help to continue to support those affected by the conflict. A gift of:

$32 can provide five blankets and mosquito nets for families arriving in displaced persons camps
$97 can provide an entire month of specialist medical assistance to injured and sick women and children
$254 can pay for nutritious, cooked meals for ten families for a week
Since 20 April, over 60,000 traumatised, injured and malnourished civilians have escaped the shrinking conflict zone, now 13 square kilometres on the Mullaittivu coast in north-east Sri Lanka where Sri Lankan Government forces and the Tamil Tiger separatists are in combat.  There are still at least 20,000 civilians trapped between the combatants.

Thousands of people have lost their lives in recent weeks and more men, women and children will die if fighting continues. Many of the wounded have no access to medical care, clean water or shelter. International calls for an extended “humanitarian pause” to allow evacuation of the civilians or for the LTTE to lay down weapons and allow free movement of civilians to end the fighting have so far been rebuffed.
