President's Reflection

January is behind us. The tennis competitions are complete, and in our house the TV is resting! Schools are going back, the rhythm of work is with us, and quite naturally we wonder about the year in front of us.

A year ago, many of us anticipated a ‘return to normal’ and it did not happen. All of us are learning to live, in our new normal, with greater levels of uncertainty, as we manage risks to health and well-being while seeking to maintain our Christian witness of hope and grace.

During January my wife and I set off for a week of camping and started by visiting a group of our friends – some of whom we had not seen in months. The next day we reflected on what the overnight visit had meant for us. We had deeply needed each other and the time we had together, and we felt renewed.

In seasons of uncertainty, where there is little predictability we need the strength, support, and companionship of each other. This is true personally and collectively.

Part of the genesis of the modern ecumenical movement is this realisation. It was in the aftermath of the WWII that the present-day Ecumenical movement gained is identity and purpose. The members of this then new movement came together as a fellowship or community of churches.

The continuing life of the NCCA, and the wider expressions of ecumenical church life, serve as a statement that in times of uncertainty and unpredictability we need each other and the strength we have together in the ‘whole household of God’.

Rev. John Gilmore

NCCA President

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone.

In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God.  Ephesians 2:19-22 (NRSV)
