Lenten resources 2024

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:

to loose the chains of injustice

and untie the cords of the yoke,

to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?"

Isaiah 58:6

The following is a short selection of resources that you may find useful for your own prayers and reflections during this season of Lent.

The Lenten season commences for the Western Churches on 14 February 2024 and Great Lent on 18 March for the Orthodox Christian Churches.

Action

Join the global pilgrimage - learn more and sign up here -  https://www.gazaceasefirepilgrimage.com/

This Lent, Christian groups from around the globe are launching the Gaza Ceasefire Pilgrimage. Already, 59 cities in 8 countries are hosting a walk the length of Gaza (about 40km) to raise funds for humanitarian relief and support for refugees. It is also a show of solidarity and protest calling for an enduring and sustained ceasefire, access to humanitarian assistance, release of all hostages on both sides, and an end of occupation so a just peace can begin.

In Australia, there are already walks planned in Melbourne, Byron Bay, Darwin, Gembrook. They are looking for organising help in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart and Canberra. If you can lend a hand in any of these places, please send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

“Together we are going to listen deeply on Country to the cry of the earth and the people of Gaza." Rev Alex Sangster

Reflection

True Freedom

Lent Resource addressing Modern Slavery (World Council of Churches)

Download for free here.

The Clewer Initiative, on behalf of the Church of England, has worked with the World Council of Churches to produce a global 6 week Lent course to help Christians learn about the challenges of modern slavery and human trafficking. Based upon Paul’s letter to the Galatians with its great theme of bondage and freedom, the course offers an opportunity for people to prayerfully consider how best they can make a creative contribution. Participants will discover the six-week Lent course that blends theological insights with practical knowledge about modern slavery. It includes facts, case studies, Bible readings, reflections, and actionable points to deepen the understanding and inspire action against slavery.
