NCCA Submission

NCCA Submissionx150

The Modern Slavery Bill 2018

Bishop Philip Huggins, on behalf of the NCCA, recently submitted a paper to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee on the Modern Slavery Bill 2018.

The submission, made on Friday 20 July, 2018, urges Parliament to pass a Modern Slavery Act with bi-partisan support before the end of the year. In addition, it affirms the timely response to this issue and that "the Australian Government and Federal Parliament are considering legislation to eradicate modern forms of slavery, to hold perpetrators responsible and to prosecute those involved in criminal forms of exploitation."

The submission also includes a response from Bishop Huggins made to the Fairfax Media in support of Andrew Forrest's call to create a new statutory office on Modern Slavery.

The NCCA has been advised that in accordance with committee procedures, our submission has been accepted and authorised for publication by the committee. At the conclusion of the inquiry, the committee will report to the Senate. A copy of the report will be loaded onto the internet and may be accessed at the web address https://www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/Senate/Legal_and_Constitutional_Affairs/ModernSlavery/submissions
