King's Birthday Honours 2023

Service to refugees and asylum seekers.

In the recent King's Birthday honours many people were recognised for their contribution to religious organisations and services.

The NCCA congratulates all of them, with a very special mention to our friend, Reverend Mee Won Yang. Rev Yang (pictured right) is a valued member of the NCCA's Australian Churches Refugees Taskforce (ACRT) and we are delighted that she has been honoured for her work.

Rev. Mee Won was awarded the Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General division, for service to the Baptist Church of Australia, and to refugee support services. She has worked in various roles with the Baptist Union of Victoria, including:

  • Multicultural Minister, 1998-2011
  • Multicultural Consultant, since 2012
  • Adjunct Lecturer, Whitely College, University of Divinity, since 2012
  • Founder, Refugee Airfare and Assistance Scheme, since 2003

She also works with the Refugee and Asylum Seeker Community and as mentioned earlier, is a member of the NCCA's ACRT. She was involved in establishing the Sanctuary Asylum Seeker Transitional Housing Project.

Rev. Mee Won is indeed, faith in action. We are blessed to call her our friend.

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
