Middle East Appeal launched amid intensifying conflict
With the escalation of conflict in the Middle East, hundreds of thousands of innocent people are being forced to flee their homes and are searching for a safe place to belong.
Every day, hundreds of people are losing their lives and with the expansion of conflict throughout the Middle East, UN agencies are warning of a displacement crisis unfolding.
With the escalation of conflict in Lebanon, according to The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, Lebanon faces its worst socioeconomic crisis in decades – hosting the highest number of refugees per capita worldwide.
The Government estimates there are 1.5 million Syrian refugees and over 13,000 refugees of other nationalities. 90% of Syrian refugees are living in extreme poverty. As the conflict expands, the displacement crisis grows.
As of 20 October, 809,000 people were displaced within Lebanon. A further 425,000 – (around 70% Syrian refugees and about 30% Lebanese) – are estimated to have crossed from Lebanon to Syria.
We need to act now.

“The time to act is now,” says Act for Peace CEO, Elijah Buol OAM. “We cannot stand by and watch while hundreds of thousands of people are displaced in Lebanon and almost two million remain displaced in Gaza. Families are without a home, without a safe place to belong and they desperately need medical assistance, food, and shelter. I implore Australians to act generously and provide life-saving support.”
Act for Peace is expanding our Gaza appeal to provide vital support in the broader Middle East region.
Gifts to the appeal will help equip local organisations in the Middle East to provide life-saving emergency assistance for people who have been forced to flee their homes, including:
- emergency medical services, primary healthcare and mental health support
- food, shelter, hygiene and emergency cash support
“Our partners in the Middle East have shared the horrific atrocities which civilians and staff are facing on a daily basis,” says Act for Peace Head of Partnerships and Programs, Geoff Robinson.
“The emergency needs for healthcare, medicines and food are great, but every gift through the emergency appeal will go directly to local organisations working with the ACT Alliance to provide critical emergency support for those displaced by conflict.”
Funds are deployed through the Act Alliance network of local organisations in the region to provide emergency assistance.
