Australian Churches Refugee Taskforce

Anti-Poverty Week October 2024

Anti-Poverty Week (APW) in Australia is an annual event aimed at raising awareness of poverty and inequality, encouraging action to address these challenges, and fostering a deeper understanding of the causes and impacts of poverty nationwide.

In 2024, APW will take place from Sunday 13 October through to Saturday 19 October. It will feature a variety of activities such as forums, workshops, and advocacy campaigns led by organisations, communities, and individuals across the country.

The Australian Churches Refugee Taskforce (ACRT) has developed this Resource Kit to support your involvement in APW 2024. The kit includes:

  • Information about Anti-Poverty Week 2024
  • Guidance on how to advocate effectively
  • A template letter to send to your local Federal Member of Parliament
  • A comprehensive list of free support services available across Australia for people seeking asylum, categorised by:
    • Education
    • Employment
    • Housing/Accommodation
    • Health and Medical services
    • Counselling
    • Casework
    • Legal advice
    • Food
    • Clothing
    • Furniture and appliances
    • Vouchers

It is important to participate in the campaigns during Anti-Poverty Week, as we work together to raise awareness, advocate for meaningful change, and support the most vulnerable members of our communities.

Please refer to the  pdf Anti Poverty Week Resource ACRT Information and Support Services August 2024 (463 KB)  for detailed information and a comprehensive list of support services to assist you.

This kit will guide you through the available resources and inform you on how you can advocate during Anti-Poverty Week 2024.

We believe our faith calls us to welcome the stranger and care for the people who find themselves displaced, marginalised or homeless, and those in need of protection. We want to see a compassionate and generous response to welcoming refugees into Australia.
