Act for Peace

Act for Peace in the world

September 21 marks the United Nation’s International Day of Peace. This global celebration of non-violence and harmony provides an important opportunity to reflect on the profound need for peace that exists in our world today and the ways we can help care for humankind and act for peace together.

Today, there are 120 million people around the world displaced by conflict alone. That’s 120 million people without the peace that comes with having a safe place to call home. Consequently, today, more than ever before, our unified voices are required to seek peace for every one of those people who are still searching for a safe place to belong.

Mutuality and solidarity

This year is the 25th anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. That declaration recognised that peace “not only is the absence of conflict, but also requires a positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged, and conflicts are solved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation”.

Indeed, in that same spirit of mutuality and solidarity, we commit to acting for peace in the world. By backing and supporting local organisations we help build positive change – driven by the community, for the community. Act for Peace believes in the value of partnership, and demonstrates this in its work in every country, with every partner, and in every program.

Acting for Peace

According to Act for Peace CEO, former refugee Elijah Buol OAM, there has never been a more important time to seek peace.

“We are facing an unprecedented humanitarian displacement crisis,” says Elijah.

“But we refuse to turn away from human suffering. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, we choose to be motivated by the necessity to act for peace in the world.”

According to Elijah, the generosity and kindness of our supporters is inspiring.

“Their spirit of generosity is a constant reminder that with unity and dedication, we really can make a difference in the world. For every person we work alongside, every partnership that we are growing, every relationship with a supporter or donor, it’s all contributing to bringing peace to people who desperately need a safe place to belong.”

Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9
