ACRT update on Asylum Seekers
Permanent Residence for Asylum Seekers: What’s Happening Now
Demonstrations held in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth demanding permanent residency and family reunification for asylum seekers, after years on temporary visas.
Many have finished school but can’t access university without permanent residency, leaving them with limited opportunities.
The Australian Churches Refugee Taskforce (ACRT), with its member churches, is helping by providing support services to asylum seekers and advocating for their rights. ACRT steps in where the government has left gaps, offering vital assistance and advocating for a permanent solution.
The Australian Refugee Action Network (ARAN ) is supporting the protests and has provided a template letter for people to send to the Minister for Immigration, urging immediate action. The Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) has also written to the Minister, calling for a review of fast-track visa rejections that have left many in limbo.
If this issue concerns you, consider writing to your MP or using ARAN’s template to help demand a permanent solution for asylum seekers.
If you wish to use a template letter produced by the ACRT, please contact us and request the template letter.
Australian Churches Refugee Taskforce (ACRT) is an activity of the National Council of Churches in Australia (NCCA).
We believe our faith calls us to welcome the stranger and care for the people who find themselves displaced, marginalised or homeless, and those in need of protection. We want to see a compassionate and generous response to welcoming refugees into Australia.
