Australian churches gear up for the International Day of Peace: a global day of action and prayer for peace

The action calls on our political leaders to address two urgent issues:

1.       Our government spends just 0.01% of national income on direct peace-building projects which tackle the root causes of conflict. These projects save lives, but vulnerable communities need more investment if they are to build a life free from conflict and poverty.

2.       Our political leaders have agreed to spend 0.5% of national income on overseas aid by 2015. This commitment has now been pushed back to 2017. This situation could change, following the outcome of the 2013 federal election. But, as it stands, we are still four years away from reaching 0.5%. We need to maintain the pressure to ensure the target is reached soon, so that war-torn communities can build a stable future.

Action on conflict has never been more urgent with almost 1 in 4 people worldwide living in countries affected by chronic violence and conflict. And, by the end of 2014, a group of approximately 30 conflict-affected countries will account for almost half of all the deaths of children around the world.

By contrast, many other developing countries – free of the suffocating impact of violence – have started to overcome poverty. That’s why action to tackle the root causes of conflict is so important to reducing global poverty.

By taking action, churches will join with millions of others in Australia and across the world. It is a great opportunity to come together in one powerful, unified voice for change.
