Act for Peace

Help rebuild lives

There's a unique power in hope – it can help to reshape futures and rebuild lives.

Sada* has been empowered to build a prosperous future. This is a powerful demonstration of your compassion in action.

It is inspiring to see people like Sada empowered to turn their lives around, finally beginning to feel safe and secure.

Your support, prayers and practical help could not be more vital today.

GIVE TODAY to support this program.

Sada's Story

Sada* is remarkable. Sada is a refugee living in Jerash Camp in Jordan, who has found new hope through Forsa – the transformational program run by Act for Peace’s local partner, the Department of Service to Palestinian Refugees (DSPR).

For Sada, this program has meant emotional support, business training, new life skills and a future filled with promise – the chance to graduate out of poverty, reclaim her autonomy, and rebuild her life.

A refugee for most of her life, Sada’s family fled conflict in Palestine when she was just three years old. In Jerash Camp she has raised her family of nine amid unimaginable hardship – from lack of access to medical care, to limited education opportunities for her children.

That's when Forsa introduced Sada to new possibilities and a pathway forward, equipping her with the skills to run a thriving cooking business from home.

As she speaks with Laura, an Australian Act for Peace staff member, Sada prepares and cooks maftoul, a delicious Palestinian couscous to sell to her customers. Her resilience and determination are evident.

“Refugee life is difficult,” she shared. “We are all strugglers. But Forsa taught us about being productive and self-sufficient, to work from home with the simplest tools, without being reliant on others. Life is going well.”

Launch of this transformative program into Ethiopia.

In the sprawling capital of Addis Ababa, many of Ethiopia’s most at-risk refugees find themselves caught in an endless cycle of hardship. They have been through so much fear and trauma, fleeing persecution, conflict, and natural disasters in neighbouring countries, to reach this vast city.

They arrive full of hope for security and a stable life, but instead often find themselves in a precarious position, joining thousands of other refugees, many of whom have been there for a decade or more. With no prospects of returning home,

Act for Peace's local partner supporting refugees in Ethiopia, DICAC (the Development and Inter-Church Aid Commission) know just how long and hard their journey can be. Since 1972, DICAC have been there for these families with food, healthcare and other vital support.

With your help, DICAC will now also be providing 50 of the most at-risk households with their own version of the ‘Graduation out of Poverty’ approach.

The program, Tesfa – meaning ‘Hope’ in Amharic – will give them the business training, life skills and emotional support they need to rebuild their confidence, support their families and, most importantly, move towards self-reliance.

This approach is not another band-aid solution, but a transformative approach for families who have lost everything:

“Imagine landing in the middle of a big, sprawling city like Addis Ababa, not understanding how things work, without the skills to support yourself. This is on top of the trauma that led you to flee in the first place.

“It’s exciting that we can help break the aid cycle, so they can steer the direction of their own lives.”  Program coordinator Mikaela O’Neil.

Projects like Forsa and Tesfa have give newfound hope.

Together we really can make a difference.

Will you please give your support today, so that together we can share this hopeful and prosperous future with people in Addis Ababa?

Together, let’s nurture this spark of hope, and use it to support communities around the world who have been displaced by conflict and disaster.

Thank you for being a part of this life-changing work.
